Goldendoodle FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions about this lovable breed, with some important things you’ll need to know if you’re going to own one of these dogs.

Where do Goldendoodles originate from?

Goldendoodles have been bred both in the US and in Australia since the early 1990s. However, they were probably around a lot earlier than this. As for the breed’s heritage, the Poodle was originally a German breed of water dog. The Golden retriever originated in Scotland.

What is hybrid vigour?

Hybrid vigour is a term used to describe the good health of a dog that has been produced by cross breeding. Since Goldendoodles are produced by breeding Poodles with Golden Retrievers, they are said to exhibit this trait. It means that they inherit far less hereditary diseases than their pure-bred parents. In this way, their mixed bloodline gives them an advantage.

What is an F1 Goldendoodle?

An F1 Goldendoodle is a first generation Goldendoodle, which means it’s parents were a Poodle and a Retriever, as opposed to a Goldendoodle and another Goldendoodle, or any other mix of breeds. It’s a good idea to ask your breeder what generation your puppy is, so that you can predict what his coat and temperament will be like. F1 Goldendoodles will be the healthiest in terms of hybrid vigour.

What kind of coat do Goldendoodles have?

Goldendoodles can be a real mix of coat types, especially in the first generation of puppies. In general though, you can expect something between the curliness of the Poodle and the longer, wavy fur of the Retriever. Most will shed only a very small amount, so they are said to be good for people with allergies.

How should I groom my Goldendoodle?

If your Goldendoodle has curlier, more Poodle-like hair then he is going to need more grooming than a silky haired variety. This is because the loose fur can become matted rather than falling out naturally. Ideally you should use a natural bristled brush to groom your dog every day, for a few minutes at a time. Every two months or so it is a good idea to visit a professional groomer, to keep the coat in the best possible condition.

How much exercise do Goldendoodles need?

Goldendoodles need a moderate amount of exercise, which means they should be given the average amount of exercise for any dog. They need a walk at least once a day, of half an hour or more. It goes without saying that they will be happy to have as many walks as you can give them! They are happy, alert dogs that like to be out and about and whilst they aren’t very athletic, they love to be meeting other dogs and sniffing out interesting scents.
